The Fraxel Laser: An Explanation and Demonstration

What is a Fraxel Laser?

The Fraxel Laser is a fraxelated ablated laser that focuses on treating only a fraction of the skin at one time. Due to the less invasive nature of this procedure, the patient is able to go back to their daily activities relatively quickly. Devon Perry, the founder of Veritas Backstage, recommends going about your normal lives the day after treatment as it is normal for your face to be red, somewhat inflamed, and swollen right after the procedure is performed. As Devon says, “All you’ll really want to do is go home and put your feet up”.

What Does the Fraxel Laser Do?

The Fraxel Laser is an FDA-approved skin resurfacing technique that is a revolutionary approach to restoring skin. The technology can be used to achieve smoother, brighter, younger-looking skin while eliminating unwanted brown spots or scars caused by acne or surgery; the laser can further be used to minimize fine lines, particularly around the lip line, and reduce pores. Devon describes the treatment as “essentially a controlled wound that forces the body to regenerate new healthy tissue”.

The Fraxel Laser can also be used for other treatments such as breast lifts, Crow’s Feet, Perioral (mouth tissue), and abdomen skin rejuvenation. However, the face is the most common area for the Fraxel Laser treatment.

How Does the Fraxel Laser Work?

In this Facebook Live video, owner Devon Perry highlights what to expect through all stages of the Fraxel Laser procedure by walking us through how the procedure works at Veritas Backstage.

Before the procedure, a “straw” called a “Zimmer Chiller” blows cold air over the patient’s face which makes the Fraxel procedure more tolerable. The technician then takes the laser and proceeds to make a crosshatch pattern for a total of 6 passes across the patient’s face; in the video, Devon explains that the crosshatching motion provides exceptionally thorough coverage of the area being treated. At one point during the procedure, the technician asks the patient to fold her lips into her mouth in order for the laser to get as close to the lip line as possible- this action allows the laser to target those hard-to-see fine lines that cause lipsticks to bleed.

The overall visit duration will total around 1 ½ hours. The actual procedure takes about 15 minutes, with about an hour spent waiting for the area to be treated to become numb; Devon recommends bringing a book or some music for this part of the process.

Not all Fraxel Laser resurfacing treatments are created equal: Devon’s expertise and expansive knowledge about this field allow her to create treatment protocols that can be taught and implemented across all Veritas staff. The innovative technology behind the Fraxel Laser provides the ability to customize each treatment plan according to the patient’s needs; for example, this procedure works great for lifting areas around the jaw line (where the chin meets the ear particularly), but not everyone may need attention in that area. An extensive consultation will be performed beforehand in order to create a customized procedure plan that works best for you.

How Long is the Fraxel Laser Healing Process?

The healing process usually takes about 7 days- it is normal for skin to be red and somewhat inflamed immediately after undergoing the procedure. Fortunately, you are able to go about your normal everyday activities almost immediately. However, please take special note that tanning in the sun after undergoing this procedure is likely to increase unwanted brown pigmentation. As you recover, Devon suggests keeping your head elevated and icing your face 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off up to 5 times a day as you need it. In conjunction with those instructions, using products like C3 Peptide (a light hydrating moisturizer that helps regulate peptides in collagen, thinning wrinkles from the inside out) and/or Flawless Brightening Complex (which helps minimize any post-op complications, such as increased brown skin pigmentation) can help minimize any post-op discomfort you may experience.

In addition, the Fraxel Laser treatment works well in tandem with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and Vampire services, such as the Vampire Facelift or the Vampire Breast Lift. Please note that if you are taking Retin-A, you should discontinue use 7 days prior to your treatment.

When Can You Expect to See Results?

As with most medical procedures, results can vary due to a variety of factors, but overall the Fraxel Laser rejuvenating procedure has seen immense success. You will need to come in several times in order to experience the full results of this procedure. The patient in the above Facebook Live video says that she could tell “something was happening” after only the second visit; her 3rd treatment can be witnessed in the video. After every treatment, each subsequent treatment will become more and more intense. Perry compares this increase in intensity with working out- each time becomes more and more intense. Just like with working out, increasing the intensity each time produces the best results. Don’t worry- it’s worth it! Perry says in the video that clients “get 18-20% correction with each treatment”.

Again, it is normal to be red and inflamed immediately following the surgery; Perry recommends going home and getting some rest, following her post-op orders mentioned above (keep head elevated, use ice for 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off, etc). Your skin might have a sunburn-like reaction, but don’t worry, this is just your body regulating to the new adjustment.

For best results, prepare the skin being treated with Veritas Bioactives Flawless Sulfate Free Cleanser in tandem with the Corrective C3 Peptide Complex and the Flawless Brightening Complex for two weeks prior to your treatment.
