Surgical Body Enhancement

Breast Augmentation

The most meaningful breast augmentation results are the ones that look like they were always there.

Breast augmentation is one of the most personally significant decisions in aesthetic surgery — and the most important factor in the outcome is not the implant itself, but the surgical judgment behind placing it. Implant size, profile, and position must be chosen in relation to your specific anatomy: chest width, existing tissue coverage, breast base diameter, and proportional goals. What looks right on one body produces an artificial result on another.

Dr. Chow uses the current generation of silicone and saline implants, placed through carefully selected incisions that minimize visible scarring. Every element — implant selection, pocket placement (above or below the muscle), and incision approach — is determined by your anatomy and your desired outcome, not by a standardized protocol.

The goal, consistently, is a result that looks proportionate and natural — and that enhances your confidence without announcing itself.

THE EXPERIENCE

Surgery is performed at our accredited Fredericksburg surgical suite and typically takes one to two hours. Recovery involves one to two weeks of limited activity, with most patients returning to desk work within a week. A supportive surgical bra is worn during recovery for the first four to six weeks.

Initial swelling makes implants appear higher and firmer than their final position. Over the following three to six months, implants settle into their natural position as surrounding tissue adapts. Final results — including natural softness, proper projection, and full aesthetic integration — are visible at three to six months. Follow-up appointments are scheduled at one week, one month, three months, and six months.

What it treats

BREAST AND CHEST

  • Breast volume that has not fully developed

  • Volume loss following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight change

  • Asymmetry in breast size or shape

  • Loss of projection or upper pole fullness over time

  • Body proportion goals related to breast size

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Breast augmentation is appropriate for adults who are in good general health, are at or near a stable weight, and have specific proportional goals that they want to achieve through surgery. Good candidates have realistic expectations about the limitations of implant-based surgery — augmentation adds volume but cannot address significant ptosis (drooping) without combining augmentation with a lift.

Patients who smoke are advised to stop well before surgery and throughout recovery, as smoking significantly impairs healing. Patients who are planning future pregnancies may choose to defer augmentation, as pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter implant position and the surrounding tissue.

Results and maintenance

Breast augmentation results are long-lasting but not permanent — modern implants are designed to last many years but may eventually require revision due to capsular contracture, position change, or personal preference changes over time. Monitoring at regular intervals, including periodic imaging, is part of responsible long-term implant care. Dr. Chow will discuss the appropriate monitoring protocol for your specific implant type during consultation.

PAIRS WITH

Awake liposuction uses tumescent local anesthesia to sculpt and contour specific areas of the body with exceptional precision — without general anesthesia, overnight stay, or extended recovery.

Breast augmentation addresses proportion from above. Awake liposuction addresses it from wherever targeted fat creates imbalance — flanks, abdomen, bra roll, inner thighs — creating a comprehensive body proportioning outcome that augmentation alone cannot achieve.

For patients who want a total body transformation — improved breast proportion and refined overall contour — combining or staging these two procedures produces results that each treatment reinforces: augmentation creates fullness and feminine proportion; liposuction creates the definition and contour that allows that proportion to register as its best. Dr. Chow will discuss staging and combination options during consultation.

QUESTIONS

Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel that feels and moves more similarly to natural breast tissue. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water — they are firmer in feel, and if they rupture, the saline is safely absorbed by the body. Modern cohesive gel silicone implants are highly stable and far less likely to migrate if the outer shell is compromised than earlier silicone generations. The choice between silicone and saline is made based on personal preference, body composition, and the amount of existing tissue coverage, which affects how implant characteristics like edge visibility and rippling present. Dr. Chow will discuss both options in detail during consultation.

The first week involves the most activity limitation: avoiding lifting, reaching overhead, and strenuous movement. Most patients return to desk work and light daily activities within five to seven days. A supportive surgical bra is worn for the first four to six weeks. Exercise restrictions typically lift progressively from light walking (week one) through return to full activity (six weeks). Initial firmness and higher implant position are normal and resolve over three to six months as the surrounding tissue relaxes and implants settle into their final position.

When implant selection and placement are matched to your specific anatomy, breast augmentation results look and feel like a natural, proportionate part of your body. The key is proper sizing — choosing an implant based on your chest dimensions, existing tissue coverage, and proportional goals rather than a target cup size. Dr. Chow uses sizing tools and imaging during consultation to help patients visualize outcomes before committing to a specific implant, and the final implant decision is made collaboratively based on what your anatomy will support naturally.

In most cases, yes. The surgical approach most commonly used — submuscular or dual-plane pocket placement with an inframammary incision — preserves glandular tissue and the connection between the nipple and the milk ducts. However, breastfeeding ability is influenced by individual anatomy and glandular development, not only by the presence of implants. Patients who plan to breastfeed in the future should discuss this during consultation so that incision placement and pocket selection can be made with that goal in mind.

Modern implants are not designed to be lifetime devices, but they are significantly more durable than earlier generations. Most patients maintain satisfying results for ten to twenty years without requiring revision. Reasons for revision include capsular contracture (internal scar tissue affecting implant feel), implant position change over time, personal preference evolution, or lifestyle changes such as significant weight fluctuation. Regular monitoring — including periodic imaging — is part of responsible long-term implant care, and Dr. Chow will establish a monitoring protocol appropriate for your specific implant at the time of surgery.
